Winning Rounds: Webb Simpson Shoots 69 to Force Phoenix Open Playoff

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

We're starting a new series of blog posts where we track the winning round of the past weekend's PGA Tour event. In our inaugural post, we're taking a look at Webb Simpson's 69 at TPC Scottsdale that forced a playoff with Tony Finau and led to his eventual win on the 73rd hole.

You can see the tracked round here in the Wasted Shots app: https://app.wastedshots.com/overview/5efc3020-1da1-4ab5-9ad5-6566c6156009

We assumed that Webb had a rough goal of shooting 68 at the par 71 track. That meant he needed to gain 3 shots overall, so we set subgoals of 17 shots for each of our four subcategories. Here's how he did...

* He achieved his goal on long shots, gaining one stroke because there were only 3 par 5s vs 4 par 3s, gaining a stroke on the par 5 13th by getting his drive into approach range (though in the sand), and losing a stroke on the par 5 15th by putting his drive in the water.

* He achieved his goal on approach shots, gaining one stroke with this money drive on the par 4 17th...

* He beat his goal on scrambling shots (note that we include lag putts as scrambling shots) by hitting approaches tight on 4, 5, and 10, thus avoiding lag putts, but his pitch on 13 missed his makeable putt range (we're saying ~10 feet) and he lost a stroke there.

* He missed his goal on our perhaps-unfair ~10 foot makeable putt range by 2 strokes with misses on the par 3s on the front, so he decided to drain this 17 foot dagger to avoid the makeable putt range completely on the 18th...

* His overall score of 69 was +1 relative to the goal of 68 we set for him. We're cutting him some slack due to the nice win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which we consider the 5th major here at Wasted Shots.
