We're starting a new series of blog posts where we track the winning round of the past weekend's PGA Tour event. In our sixth post, we're taking a look at Tyrrell Hatton's 74 (+2) at Bay Hill to win by 1 stroke.
You can see the tracked round here in the Wasted Shots app:
For the second week in a row, golf fans were treated to several televised bad shots. Bay Hill surrendered very few birdie chances and several turned into 3 putts. Tyrrell kept his emotions in check and outlasted the field to earn his first PGA Tour win. We figured that Tyrrell thought he'd need to shoot around even par to win, so we set his goal score at 72. Here's how he did...
* Tyrrell's long game was solid today, helping him gain 3 shots on par 5s (1 long on #6, two approaches on #4 and #12). He was a little aggressive on #11 and tugged a driver into the water, leading to double.
* Tyrrell's approach game was mostly solid today, but even in extremely tough conditions, he was able to pull of this near ace on #7
* Scrambling and Makeable Putts were a bit off, but also solid relative to the field.
We think Tyrrell won this event with his extremely clean play on the last 6 holes. Every hole had what we at Wasted Shots consider typical for a par shooter. The par 4s each had one long distance shot, one approach, one scrambling shot, and one makeable putt. The par 3s were equally solid (just with no long distance shots), as was the remaining par 5 (just with 2 long distance shots).
Overall, while Tyrrell didn't reach the goals we set for him, if we tracked everyone else in the event, he was probably closer than everyone else. Congrats Tyrrell, and enjoy Augusta!
