Winning Rounds: Adam Scott Shoots 70 to Win Genesis Open

We're starting a new series of blog posts where we track the winning round of the past weekend's PGA Tour event. In our third post, we're taking a look at Adam Scott's 70 (-1) at Riviera that beat an extremely strong field of golfers by 2 strokes.

You can see the tracked round here in the Wasted Shots app:

We assumed that Adam had a rough goal of shooting 68 at the par 71 track so he could hold off all the talent behind him (Matt Kuchar, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, etc). That meant he needed to gain 4 shots overall, so we set his subgoals for him to gain those shots in the approach, scrambling, and makeable putts subcategories. Here's how he did...

* Adam eclipsed his goal on long shots with great drives on par 5s #1 and #17 that got him into approach range from the tee. This one on 17 let him hit a long approach to scramble range and basically seal the win...

* Adam beat his approach game goal, with another great drive on the short par 4 #10 that skipped his approach range and got him into scrambling range.

* Adam's Scrambling game was hit and miss today with some nice long putts like this one on the third to take an early lead...

And this snake on #6 to bounce back from a couple of tough holes on #4 and #5...

... but a few hiccups that left him with 5 holes with multiple scrambling shots. To be fair, some of those were just barely outside what we consider makeable for pros - 10 feet.

* Adam did give back a few makeable putts, like the one on #4 and two on #5 and on #11.

Adam didn't quite reach the goals we set for him, but it was still enough to hold on and win. Congrats Adam!
